RIP Stephen Barnwell (46 Commando)

R.I.P. Stephen Barnwell (WW2 Veteran / 46 Commando) whom I photographed at his home just outside of Brighton back in May of this year.

A larger than life character, when I visited him he was full of voice and bravado. Despite this I remember being aware of the feeling that he didn't want me to go; not that it was me but that it was company and another person to talk to other than his good friend who lived opposite.

Stephen took hold of my hand with both of his as we shook to say goodbye.

So glad I was able to take his portrait because, as my friend Jeff Hewitt wrote, despite his passing in the early hours of this morning, he'll always be with us.
